“The first step towards success is taken when you refuse to be captive of the environment that you first find yourself in”- Mark Caine.

Every one of us wants to be successful in life and as we study, work, or do business, our goal is to be successful.

We were all born and brought up in contrasting environments. Some in well to do families, others in average ones and some in very poor circumstances and this is one thing that one has no choice over. But herein things change.

There are so many examples of people who have failed in life or are stuck in one place in life and when asked, they either blame their absentee dads, their drunk  parents, their school teachers or lecturers but never themselves. We have many people who have come from underprivileged backgrounds but have gone on to become successful.  We also have many examples of people who have come from privileged backgrounds and yet have nothing to show for it.

Despite our background, nature gives us all equal opportunities. We breath the same air, step on the same soil so nobody can say that they have failed because of their background. I am not blind to the fact that a person travelling by car will reach a destination faster than one riding there on a bicycle; but the fact remains that they will all finally get there.

Our success in life is not determined by where we have come from but by our choices of where we want to be in life. These choices are not enough if not followed by actions. If you have come from an underprivileged background, use that as an impetus to push you towards success. Sitting at home and complaining about things won’t get any one of us anywhere. Acting on our dreams and aspirations is the best way forward. If we just sit and fantasize about what we want to do and then go back to sleep, then our aspiration are nothing more than wishes.

As I conclude, I will quote the words of Walt Disney “Our dreams will come true if we have the courage to pursue them” Success is not something to be wished for, it is something to be worked for. It is something to be attained. All the best from Mwangi Ndegwa. To read more posts by Mwangi. click HERE

I love this school of thought. There is always a choice irrespective of where we find ourselves and the key to a better tomorrow is us plus the choices we make…
