There is an old story about a poor man who goes to church every day and prays before the statue of a great saint, begging, “Dear Saint, please, please, please, give me the grace to win the lottery.” For months he goes to church with this same prayer. Finally the exasperated statue comes to life, looks down at the poor man, and says, “My son – please, please, please, buy a lottery ticket.”

Here was a man, praying each day to win the lottery and yet could not even be bothered to buy a (lottery) ticket.

Every single day, people sit by moaning about their lives, wishing their lives would improve and yet are not willing to take any steps towards improving their lives. Instead, they live their lives with the expectation that a fairy God mother will appear from nowhere and grant them all their wishes or perhaps relying on other people to ensure their dreams or ambitions come true. It never occurs to them that only they are responsible for their own success; not their parents, friends or boss.

These are people who will complain about not having a job, not having enough money to start a business; as if money will drop from the sky specially for them. When you ask them what steps they are taking to improve their lives, they look at you as if you are crazy. They tell you there is nothing they can do since they don’t see many jobs advertised, or they see no point in applying for jobs since they believe they will not even be short-listed. The fact that the majority of jobs are not advertised and personal recommendation/networking often increases their chances, is still not enough to get them out of their comfort zone. They may be gifted in writing, acting, drawing, coding etc but rather than create websites for people, or start sharing their work online to gauge potential customer reaction, they will not do so as this risks rejection and/or criticism. So instead, they continue to moan that the world is unfair (which by the way is true, but moaning won’t change anything), while they wait for someone to discover them and their amazing but hidden talent.

So please, before you start dreaming about winning the lottery, buy a ticket i.e. do some heavy lifting and get yourself out of your comfort zone. Yes, you risk rejection but surely this is better than doing nothing? Be strong, be tough and take control of your life! To read more posts by Miriam, click HERE
