What defines you? Is it your present, future or your past?

There is a song that really touches my heart each time I feel so down and out especially when I feel punished for my past mistakes. It’s called YOU ARE MORE By Tenth Avenue.  Part of the inspiring lyrics are:

There’s a girl in the corner
With tear stains on her eyes
From the places she’s wandered
And the shame she can’t hide

She says, how did I get here?
I’m not who I once was.
And I’m crippled by the fear
That I’ve fallen too far to love

But don’t you know who you are,

What’s been done for you?
Yeah don’t you know who you are?

You are more than the choices that you’ve made,
You are more than the sum of your past mistakes,
You are more than the problems you create,
You’ve been remade.

With that, I am reminded that I am more than the choices I have made, than the sum of my past mistakes, than the problems I create!

Quite often, we allow our past to shadow who we have become and instead, we allow it to define us, to remind us that nothing good can come out of us, that we are not worthy of love and a good and peaceful life. Simply because we need to be punished by the mistakes we made. The mistakes we made in business should not define us as business failures. That relationship that didn’t work out shouldn’t make us feel less beautiful and loved. That mistake we made as a parent shouldn’t make us define ourselves as a bad mum or dad. What mistakes are still holding you back?

I wish I could whisper this to you each time, but I hope you will always remember,” You are more than the sum of your past mistakes! And you are worthy of love just as you are! ” To get a male perspective on this, check out Mitchell’s post HERE
