We live in an era where technology has disrupted our traditional models of living on account of which organizations and individuals have fallen in love with the social networks; whether Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tinder, Quora, you name it.

However, there is difference in usage along the lines of gender in the sense that men use social media more for business reasons. Women on the other hand, use it more to talk about their personal lives and to share their expressions and feelings. You will find paragraphs enriched with life experiences either expressing happiness or frustration. On Men’s profiles, you will find cars, movies, products or services they are selling.

KOT (Kenyans on Twitter) is popularly known for zero chills especially where a non – Kenyan speaks ill of the country and for that, we must commend the online community.  It has informed us as well of how hilarious we are as a citizenry. Irrespective of the challenges that we face, we always find some humour in it, to ease away the heavy burden that lies on all men.

Allow me to digress today from a purely male/female perspective to a pertinent issue we are facing as a country. There’s an emerging breed of online influencers who use their profiles to influence trending topics commonly referred to as “Twitter Big wigs” and I am certain corporations who have used their services are a grateful lot. However, as it is currently political season, I will advocate for caution. Careful what you believe as some platforms are currently being used to spread fake news and propaganda. At times it is difficult to mine through this data and make a logically sound inference on the reality of a situation. On that front, you have to be careful about what you believe in these streets.

I will advocate for us to responsibly use our social networks to advocate for harmony, adherence to the rule of law and mutual respect of divergent opinions so we can uphold our dignity as human beings Until we speak again, I am your host Mitchell Odhiambo. Welcome to a man’s world. To get a female perspective on this, please read my colleague, Mercy’s post HERE
