Sometimes I have been puzzled by the ignorance that some of our youth display.
Youth who, despite their university degrees and higher education qualifications, seem ignorant about the world around them, let alone the world outside their front door & campuses. Youth who are sleep walking their way in to damaging their reputations. Youth who think nothing about going on to social media and displaying their ignorance for all to see. Youth who display their ignorance in the form of: sexism, tribalism, religious intolerance, admiring despots who have been responsible for killing their own citizens, admiring corrupt leaders and so the list goes on.
My question to these youth is: who do you rely upon when it comes to making informed decisions? Where do you get your information from? Who influences your decisions? Are you able to see things from two perspectives or only yours? Do you only rely on one person, onewspaper, one TV channel, one Facebook page, one tweet to influence your decision(s)?
You say you want a future in the corporate world. You say you want to build a business that will go global. Really? With this level of ignorance? You say you want to travel the world, but how do you expect to do so when your mind is so closed? Has it occurred to you that no matter how talented you are, your (ignorant and controversial) views could stand in the way of you achieving your full potential? Why would you sabotage your future?
The simple fact is this; if someone is on social media, this means they have access to Google, which means that in this day and age, ignorance is a choice. So educate yourself using various sources (not just one), ensure you have a fair and non biased perspective of the world, a non biased view of people from other places or religions or gender, or face sabotaging your own career or business potential. After all, who wants to deal with an educated but ignorant person if this person’s ignorance can destroy your business brand which tool 10 years to build, or who passes social media gossip as truth.
