Take ships as an example. Although they are so large and are driven by strong winds, they are steered by a very small rudder wherever the pilot wants to go. Likewise, the tongue is a small member of the body yet it boasts of great things. Consider that a great a forest can be set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, which can be a good servant or a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole body, sets the whole course of one’s life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. Be careful therefore how you use it.
From the abundance of his lips, a man’s stomach shall be filled for life and death are in the power of the tongue. You can use it to edify and to build, you can use it as well to bring ruin and destruction. If you deploy your tongue to bring evil, you will bring utter destruction. For the words of a gossip are like choice morsels, they go down to a man’s innermost parts. Though you do not break the bone, you obliterate one’s resolve and crush their spirit and a crushed spirit, who can stand?
Use your words to build and to edify, let your speech forever be seasoned with salt, bringing forth words of wisdom and instruction. Use gentle words to respond in the face of adversity for a soft spoken word turns away wrath, but harsh words stir up anger. With patience, even a ruler can be persuaded, and a soft tongue can break a bone. If your anger is boiling within, keep your mouth shut, for even a fool is thought wise if he keeps his mouth shut. Only fools are quick to advertise their folly in the assembly.
Use your mouth to construct the future household you desire and accompany that with action. The minute you profess, you cannot accomplish a task; your mind takes that and locks it in. However, if you pronounce you can accomplish it, your mind will work all permutations it can conceive to yield a solution and because of the energy you radiate into the universe, the universe will conspire to help you achieve what you have set your mind to do.
