Many if us have heard the Phrase, “If you cannot be a pencil to write someone’s happiness, then you better be an eraser to erase someone’s sadness.”

Once upon a time, the pencil and the eraser were having a conversation about each other’s job. Both of them were praising each other for their hard work as they recognized that they were nothing without each other. The pencil then started drawing a straight line as the eraser looked on. Suddenly, the pencil lost its balance and the straight line was ruined. This made the pencil very sad as she knew that the eraser would have to suffer because of her mistake.

“I am so sorry. “The pencil said to the eraser. Not understanding what the pencil was talking about, the eraser asked, what for?

“I am so sorry you get hurt because of me. Whenever I make a mistake, you are always there to erase it. But as you make my mistakes vanish, you lose a part of yourself and get smaller each day. “The pencil cried.

On hearing this, the eraser replied, “that is true, but I don’t really mind. You see, I was created to do this. I was made to help you each time you did something wrong. Even though I know one day I will be gone, I am actually happy with my job. So please stop worrying, I am not happy to see you sad!”

                                                                                                          *************************

There are people in our lives who are like the eraser; they have stood with us, erased our tears, covered or even paid up for our mistakes and made so many sacrifices, specifically, our parents have paid the ultimate price for us. The stupid mistakes we did growing up, the financial sacrifices they made to see us happy. Do we really take the time to appreciate them?

Just like the eraser, that diminishes each time. A time will come when we shall not have these people in our lives anymore. Despite them being faithful to play their role in our lives, do we really take the time to appreciate them when they are still alive? Many a time, we say good things when giving a tribute in the sad event of a death, how about we start appreciating these people while they are still alive, when it still has meaning to them.

You know who has been that eraser in your life. As the year ends, take the time to let them know that their role in your life is not taken for granted. They may not know how special it means to you. To read more posts by Mercy, click HERE
